About Art Therapy
At Wolfdale School, one of the therapy types we offer is Art Therapy. ‘Art Psychotherapy’, also known as ‘Art Therapy’, is a form of psychotherapy that uses visual and tactile art making as a form of communication. Art Therapists are statutorily regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This form of therapy is great for those with learning difficulties who often struggle to express their thoughts and feelings verbally. The aim of therapy even though adapted to the individual will strive for positive change, self-awareness and growth.
Art Therapy is not about being good at art making and is different to an art lesson. The therapist will work with the student to find the right materials to help express themselves. Even though art materials are encouraged, students can also use the space to talk or play. Every student experiences Art Therapy sessions differently as we understand each individual will need the space for different reasons.
Art Therapy at Wolfdale School
Therapy sessions are conducted onsite in a safe, confidential and supportive environment on a weekly basis except during the school holidays. Once consent has been given from student and caregivers then 6 – 12 therapy assessment sessions will take place before a report is written to help support the child at home and within school. The therapist will often work alongside the staff members, caregivers and other professionals who work around the student to feedback therapeutic guidance if they feel this is necessary.
Students are referred to therapy by staff members, caregivers, other professionals or can self-refer. Please note there is a waiting list to be seen for therapy and therefore we cannot always guarantee a student will be seen straight away.
