Inclusion Approach

At Wolfdale we strive for a regulation led and mental health positive culture within school. This aims to promote positive behaviour, ensuring that all pupils can learn in a calm, safe and supportive environment. Our focus is the development of individual regulation skills. Staff support pupils with sensory, communication and choice-led intervention combining effective boundaries setting and maintaining high standards of behaviour that reflect the values of the school.

We have a large team of Arts Psychotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Sensory Needs Practitioner, SENCO and Inclusion Facilitators that lead the teachers and wider support team to support pupils to access their learning.

Zones of Regulation

As part of the inclusion practise at Wolfdale, pupils are taught ‘The Zones of Regulation Framework’ across the school sites. Zones of Regulation is an evidence-based intervention. Its unique curriculum supports students to create a personalised ‘tool kit’ to develop self-regulation skills. This is achieved through collaboration with pupils, utilising their personal experiences of emotions and soothing techniques. Within their lessons, pupils will be taught what these experiences mean for them as an individual, integrating their internal responses and individual sensory needs. They will be guided to consider how this experience affects their own behaviours and with teaching staff they will plan individual interventions for different emotional states. The emphasis on this learning is to guide pupils to pull out coping strategies required for when they are in different emotional states. Alongside this learning there still is an expectation that the students positively contribute to the culture of the school, and this does require appropriate behaviour. These individual toolkits, alongside pupils Care Plan’s consider the individual’s disability and developmental stages to intervene when required to support the pupil’s adherence to the school rules as well as develop key strategies for life beyond school.
